Daz-I-Kue

We need some Daz-I-Kue love up in here.

Honestly, dude’s been putting up so many good house mixes on the interwebs these days, I haven’t even been able to pick out a single one to post. It’s like choosing which one of your brother’s kids is your favorite — you can do it, sure (it’s not like they’re your kids), but you’re probably still gonna feel pretty bad about it after. Still, this new mix of his ended up on-loop in the headphones today, and starts off with Universal Robot Band’s “Barely Breaking Even”, a tune who’s lyrics about scraping rent together and being broke after the weekend have always spoken to me on a very deep, personal and real level as a not-so-gainfully-employed musician (it’s the oldest profession). And seeing as I used “Dance and Shake Your Tambourine” in my last mix, I figured it’s fitting. There’s also a nice remix of “Diamond Life” in there that I haven’t heard before and am kind of mad at myself for not knowing.

So yeah, enough chat. Get on this Daz-I-Kue (of Bugz In The Attic fame) mix and boogie the holidays away.

(Side note: I guess this mix was recorded to promote the Top Ten Social party out of Oakland this week, where Daz will be spinning on Friday, November 27th. Seeing as I’m a coast away and the Hudson is about as far west as I get these days, I don’t know a damned thing about the spot, but it seems like a good party. If any left-coasters find their way to this post, you should almost-definitely check it out.)

CHAMPION SOUND RADIO

Ohhhh lord, some more goodness out of Miami here. Compliments of the CHAMPION SOUND crew and their weekly party at the Electric Pickle comes this promo mix, CHAMPION SOUND RADIO (download link), with the night’s resident DJs and badasses, Sire Esq, A-Train, and Mr. Brown throwing down for about 15 minutes each in this 45 minute set. We’re talking hip-hop, funk, soul, latin bit of turntablism here and there, all around killer shit, Miami style. Seriously been bumping this set through my headphones on the subway all week, perfect for feeling hot when the weather’s getting cold. Download now and get funky.

I Dream of Love

Alright, some off-the-cuff shit here from yours truly, old-school B&C radio show styles, in an attempt to keep up with fresh mixes here. Just a quick set on my day off, a tribute to the end of a summer we barely got to know, complete with some admittedly sloppy mixing and chooooice tunes. A lot of boogie and disco, some newer ish to balance out the old stuff, and some proper house to keep it all tied together, perpetually promoting the gospel of good musics.

Really happy with the track selection here so check it out and feel the grooooove.

Good vibes @ Body Music, Bembe

This mix right here is a nod to one of my favorite clubs/bars/lounges in Brooklyn, Bembe, and their weekly Sunday “Body Music” party. Hosted by resident DJs Jesse Mann and the good Reverend Soul, Body Music hosts live music by some of Brooklyn’s finest funk and afrobeat bands with some seriously dope DJ sets before, during, and after the show. Holding down boogie, latin, disco, house, African business, and anything else that sounds good, in short these guys play the brilliant sort of mix of tunes I go out at night looking to hear. Couple it with one of the most chill, welcoming, home-away-from-home spots you’ll ever find yourself at (with some seriously fine, and totally reasonably priced drinks) and you’ve got yourself a real party. Check out this demo mix from Jesse Mann and do your best not to listen to it too many times over (I know, it’s hard)… you’ll wear out the tracks.

You can check the playlist here on Jesse’s site, along with a big list of other mixes you probably need to hear, or just come to Body Music at Bembe and catch the good vibe for yourself.

(Side Note: How many of us have that same bright blue needle case? I see more of those around town than Streisand records in a thrift shops…)

DJ Tre Swift, Paris Styles

Fresh fresh fresh stuff here from fellow former Miamian, b-boy, DJ, perpetual world traveler, and all around cool motherfucker… Tre Swift. “Expected Hectic Eclectic” describes it all, pretty diverse with reeeal a nice vibe throughout. Soul, hip-hop, some electro boogie and R&B, heavy bass-ness, jungle beats, and breaks… basically all the kind of shit that makes me want to keep a website like this up in the first place. An hour and seven minutes of fire, people. Give it a listen, see if that first Asa track doesn’t hook you right away. And make sure to check the SoundCloud page of the man himself, DJ Tre Swift, for more remixes, mash-ups, and large tunes.

Arun Brown & Co.

Time for part 2 of the series I’m calling Mr. Brown Gets Shit Done. More boogie, funk, soul, rare groove, and other fine vibes to hold your attention in these Facebooking, iPhoning, ADD-inflicted times, from one of Miami’s finest DJs and crate diggers. Check it and pay your respects on his Soundcloud account in hopes that it’ll motivate him to get outta the stacks for a minute to lay down some more of the good good funk.

Mr. Brown @ Purdy Lounge

Well, 2009’s must be the summer of people getting shit done, because I’m sitting here with not one but two new mixes from original B&C lord of the decks, one of the hosts of Miami’s weekly Champion Sound party, perpetually crate-digging ambassador to Miami’s music scene, and all around lazy motherfucker, Mr. Brown. The guy who spends so much time in dusty back rooms of record shops and old ladies attics in the ghetto, that it’s fucking impossible to ever get him to sit down long enough to record any of the crazy shit he’s finding. But occassionally the stars and planets aline, unseen forces in the universe shift, music is in the air, and maybe with a girl to impress (or something) Brown gets down to some serious mixing.

First, a nice little set of hip-hop, funk, soul, reggae and breaks, the perfect soundtrack for a sweaty August day. A few different styles, some turntable trickery and nice blends, make sure you cop this mix and by the time you’ve digested it I’ll be back up with another set from Brown, and some additional goodness from former-305 lord of the dance (and now perpetual world traveler) DJ Tre Swift, and maybe a few other things that might make the heat a little more bearable. Update them bookmarks people, we’ll be keeping it up like this all summer long. For now, settle into a nice groove with Mr. Brown and his untitled August set.

Brooklyn Summer

Alright, if we’re going to get this started again, let’s do it right. Fresh mix time!

Dylan Garret’s “Summertime ‘09 Mix (#1)”

A little scattershot summertime sampling of odds and ends I like, meant to battle the oppressive humidity and MTA fare hikes of recent days with fine sultry sounds. A slow build with some deeper mid-tempo and classic house to start, ramped up into some boogie-tinged goodness (compliments of War), wrapping up with funky breaks and beats to make your butt shake. Economically priced at $0.00 in these oppressive times!
